If your old garage door is worn out and beyond repair, it is time to start shopping for a new garage door. Here are three things that you should consider when shopping for and purchasing a new door for your garage.

#1 Insulation

The first thing that you need to take into consideration is the insulation that the garage door provides. You can install a basic wooden garage door, but that will not provide you with that much insulation. If you want to control the temperature in your garage a bit more and not experience so many freezing cold days in the winter and sweltering hot days in the summer, an insulated garage door is one way to achieve that.

Look for a garage door that provides you with a few inches of insulation. This will make your garage door more sturdy and will increase the energy efficiency and temperature control of your garage.

#2 Windows

The second thing that you need to take into consideration is if you want a garage door with windows. Keep in mind that adding windows to your garage door will make it easier for people to peek inside of your garage. However, adding windows is also a great way to let more natural light into your garage so it isn't always so dark without the use of additional lights.

If you do decide to go with windows, make sure that they are secure and safe. Install tinted or shaded windows instead of clear windows to make it harder to see into your garage while still providing you with some light. Also, see if shatter resistant film can be added to your garage door windows so that they cannot be easily broken.

#3 Maintenance

Finally, be sure to consider maintenance. If you installed a wood based garage door, you are going to need stain the wood on a regular basis and make sure that the garage door is well-sealed and taken care of. On the other hand, if you use a plastic-based material, you should have very little maintenance to contend with outside of washing your garage door. Metal garage doors should also provide very little maintenance, but you need to make sure that they never develop rust.

Before purchasing  a garage door, decide if you want windows or insulation added to the garage door and be sure to think through the maintenance requires for the material you chose to have your garage door made out of.
